Britain's first national satellite, launched on 28 October 1971 at Woomera, Australia, by a Black Arrow rocket. Built by the British Aircraft Corporation, the spin-stabilized Prospero was launched to test basic systems for future satellites. It also performed a single scientific experiment to detect micrometeoroids. It was officially deactivated in 1996. Its anticipated orbital life is about 100 years.
