A multidimensional surface in which the energy of a system is plotted as a function of the parameters that characterize that system, such as the distances between atoms in a molecule. The concepts of potential-energy curve and potential-energy surfaces are simple examples of energy landscapes. The concept of an energy landscape has many important applications in chemistry and physics, notably in chemical reactions, the study of glasses, molecular spectroscopy, nuclear fission, and protein folding.
