Two inks of different colours, one charged positively, the other negatively, contained in tiny transparent spheres sandwiched between a transparent conductive film and a layer with individual electrodes at each pixel position. Changing pixel voltages pushes one colour up and pulls the other down, resulting in a visible colour change. When power is removed from the display, the inks remain in place and so the image remains visible. See also electronic paper.
