A deciduous shrub or small tree (family Lythraceae) with many spiny branches, bright red flowers, and round, edible berries 5–12 cm across with thick, reddish skin enclosing a pulp and up to 1400 seeds, each surrounded by its own layer of nutritious pulp. The seeds are eaten raw. The plant originated in Iran and has been cultivated extensively for centuries.
