A device for propelling a pilot out of an aircraft or spacecraft to parachute to safety in an emergency. The Mercury project used escape rockets but the Gemini project introduced two ejection seats. Crews on the first four space shuttle flights were strapped into ejection seats but these were abandoned for launches as being too complicated for a full crew. Following the Challenger disaster, NASA has worked on developing other escape systems.
