An early NASA plan for sending astronauts to the Moon. The plan was to use two Saturn rockets, one launching a crew into Earth orbit and another carrying up the propellant for the trip to the Moon. The two would dock in orbit and the complete spacecraft and crew would then travel to the Moon.
The idea was proposed by German rocket engineer Wernher von Braun in opposition to the direct ascent mode, which would have required a more powerful rocket. Both plans were eventually scrapped in favour of the lunar-orbit rendezvous mode.
