单词 duty
释义
duty

Chemical Engineering
  • The power requirement for a machine or item of process plant such as a heat exchanger. The duty of a heat exchanger is dependent on the amount of liquid to be heated, cooled, vaporized, or condensed. The duty of a centrifugal pump is dependent on the flow delivered and pressure generated. The SI units for duty are watts or more usually kW or MW.

Electronics and Electrical Engineering
  • A statement of the operating conditions and their durations to which a device is subjected, including rest and de-energized periods. Uninterrupted duty is the operation of a device without any off-load (see load) periods. Continuous duty is uninterrupted duty that continues for an indefinite time. Intermittent duty has on-load (see load) periods alternating with off-load periods. When the on-load periods are small in comparison with off-load periods the intermittent duty is termed short-time duty; periodic duty occurs if the load conditions are regularly recurrent. Operation at loads and for durations that are both subject to wide variation is varying duty. The duty cycle is a group of variations of load with time. The ratio of the on-load period under specified conditions to the sum of the on-load and off-load periods is the duty ratio.

Philosophy
  • That which one must do, or that which can be required of one. The term carries implications of that which is owed (due) to other people, or perhaps to oneself. Universal duties would be owed to persons (or sentient beings) as such, whereas special duties arise in virtue of specific relations, such as being the child of someone, or having made someone a promise. Duty or obligation is the primary concept of deontological approaches to ethics, but is constructed in other systems out of other notions. In the system of Kant a perfect duty is one that must be performed whatever the circumstances; imperfect duties may have to give way to the more stringent ones. In another usage, perfect duties are those that are correlative with the rights of others; imperfect duties are not. Problems with the concept include the ways in which duties need to be specified (a frequent criticism of Kant is that his notion of duty is too abstract). The concept may also suggest a regimented view of ethical life, in which we are all forced conscripts in a kind of moral army, and may encourage an individualistic and antagonistic view of social relations.
