An 8th-magnitude planetary nebula in Vulpecula, also known as M27 and NGC 6853. It is the most prominent planetary nebula for small telescopes. The Dumbbell Nebula is so named because of its double-lobed appearance, like an hourglass, in large apertures or on photographs. The Dumbbell lies about 1400 l.y. away.
