The movement of a planet towards or away from its parent star, resulting from interactions with surrounding gas, smaller planetesimals, or resonance with the orbits of other planets. Planetary migration is thought to have changed the orbits of the outer planets in our Solar System after their formation (see grand tack model) and accounts for the existence of hot Jupiters near their parent stars in other planetary systems.
