An abbreviation for differential pressure cell. A widely used device used to measure the pressure difference between two points, such as a process fluid flowing through a pipeline or across an item of equipment such as a heat exchanger. They are used to measure flow rate, level, or depth of fluids in vessels, and the status of equipment for the presence of fouling, amongst many other uses. By detecting and measuring the pressure difference between two points, such as across an orifice plate, a transducer then converts the signal into an electrical signal. This signal is then used to adjust the rate of flow by sending an appropriate control signal to open or close a valve, for example. See differential pressure.
