A political insurrection which took place in Newport, Wales, in 1839, following the dissolution of the National Convention of the Chartists. John Frost, a former mayor of Newport, planned to capture the town and release a Chartist leader, Henry Vincent, from gaol. However, the authorities were forewarned and soldiers ambushed the insurgents, killing several of them. Frost and others were arrested and received death sentences, later commuted to transportation.
