A French satellite launched in 2010 June to measure the total solar irradiance, perform helioseismology observations, and measure the Sun’s diameter and shape to within a few milliarcseconds. The satellite was named after the French astronomer Jean-Felix Picard (1620–1682), who first accurately measured the Sun’s diameter. PICARD ceased operation in 2014 June.
