who, together with Hill, provided in 1952 the first statistical evidence linking smoking and lung cancer. Doll studied medicine at St Thomas Hospital in London, qualifying in 1937. After a spell in the Royal Army Medical Corps, he joined the faculty at LSHTM in 1948. Appointed Professor of Medicine at Oxford U in 1969, he was Warden of Green College from 1979 to 1983. Appointed FRS in 1966, he was awarded the Society's Royal Medal in 1986. He was knighted in 1971 and made a Companion of Honour in 1996.
