The lowest region of Earth’s ionosphere, between 80 and 90 km in altitude. The D layer principally absorbs, rather than reflects, radio waves, particularly around sunspot maximum. Sudden ionospheric disturbance events result from enhancements of the dayside D layer by short-wave radiation from solar flares.
