A transition between two electronic energy levels in a molecule that proceeds directly between the two levels. By contrast, an indirect transition between two electronic energy levels in a molecule involves either changes in vibrational energy levels and/or energy level crossing in potential energy curves. Simple electronic spectra of molecules are associated with direct transitions while phenomena such as fluorescence and phosphorescence are associated with indirect transitions.
