1. The apparent motion of a planet from west to east as seen from the earth against the background of the stars.
2. The anticlockwise rotation of a planet, as seen from its north pole. Compareretrograde motion.
Astronomy
The movement of a body such as a planet from west to east on the celestial sphere; or the movement of a body in its orbit in an anticlockwise sense as seen from above the Sun’s north pole; or the rotation of a body on its axis in an anticlockwise sense as seen from above the Sun’s north pole. Direct motion, also known as prograde motion, is the normal direction of orbital motion and axial rotation of bodies in the Solar System; the opposite direction is retrograde. Objects with direct motion have an orbital or axial inclination less than 90°.
