A meteor shower, one of the three most active of the year, detectable between July 17 and August 24. Peak activity normally falls on August 12, when the radiant lies at RA 3h 12m, dec. +58°, near the Double Cluster. Activity at maximum is high, with ZHRs ranging from 80 to 140. Perseid meteors are fast (geocentric velocity 60 km/s); many are bright, and a high proportion leave persistent trains. The Perseids are produced by debris from Comet Swift–Tuttle.
