单词 Larmor precession
释义
Larmor precession

Physics
  • A precession of the motion of charged particles in a magnetic field. It was first deduced in 1897 by Sir Joseph Larmor (1857–1942). Applied to the orbital motion of an electron around the nucleus of an atom in a magnetic field of flux density B, the frequency of precession is given by eB/4π‎mvμ‎, where e and m are the electronic charge and mass respectively, μ‎ is the permeability, and v is the velocity of the electron. This is known as the Larmor frequency.

Chemistry
  • The precession of the magnetic moment of an entity about an external magnetic field. It was first deduced in 1897 by Sir Joseph Larmor (1857–1942). Larmor precession can occur for electrons, protons, and nuclei because of the quantum-mechanical spin of these entities. The frequency of the Larmor precession is called the Larmor frequency. The Larmor precession and the Larmor frequency are the key concepts underlying electron paramagnetic resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance.
