An important victory for the British over the French in the War of the Austrian Succession. George II at the head of 40,000 British, Hanoverian, and Austrian troops marched from the Austrian Netherlands to the banks of the River Main. He was attacked by a larger French army under Noailles, but forced them back across the Main and finally across the River Rhine. George II was the last reigning British sovereign to take command on the battlefield.
