His chief contributions were to the study of meteors, for which he calculated the heights and velocities of over 1200, and published a catalogue of meteor shower radiants. He deduced that the temperature of the atmosphere at about 100 km was higher than had been believed. Denning also discovered nebulae, comets, and novae, including Nova Aquilae in 1918.
