A rare type of achondrite meteorite, named after the meteorite that fell at Nakhla, Egypt, in 1911, the first known fall of this type, and which is reputed to have killed a dog. The nakhlites (also known as augite–olivine achondrites) consist of approximately 80% by weight of the mineral augite, and about 14% by weight of iron-rich olivine. Their textures suggest they formed within cooling magmas. Nakhlites belong to the class of SNC meteorites, which are thought to come from Mars. In common with the chassignites, the nakhlites have a formation age of 1.3 billion years and an exposure age of about 12 million years.
