A US Air Force base in California that is home to the Air Force Space Command. Vandenberg is the only US military base from which NASA and commercial satellites are launched into polar orbit.

The base, about 240 km northwest of Los Angeles, covers 39 893 ha and has about 3 000 buildings. The Command's 30th Space Wing operates the base, being responsible for all space and missile activities on the US West Coast, and the 30th Operational Group is responsible for the Western Test Range. Vandenberg began in 1941 as the US Army's Camp Cooke, and in 1957 was transferred to the Air Force to become the nation's first space and ballistic missiles operational and training base.
