单词 | Clarke, Sir Arthur C. (1917–) |
释义 | Clarke, Sir Arthur C. (1917–) The inventor of the communications satellite. Clarke was a physicist at the British Interplanetary Society in February 1945 when he published the concept in an article entitled “Extra-Terrestrial Relays: Can Rocket Stations Give World-wide Radio Coverage” in Wireless World magazine. Clarke is better known in popular culture as the author of “The Sentinel,” a short story that served as the basis for the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which he co-wrote with Stanley Kubrick. In a subsequent article entitled “A Short Pre-History of Comsats, Or: How I Lost a Billion Dollars in My Spare Time,” Clarke lamented his failure to patent the concept. ( Note: Clarke reportedly received the princely equivalent of US$40.00 for the article.) While Clarke did not achieve great wealth directly from his invention, he was knighted on May 26, 2000. |
