Cat 6 (Category 6) A type of cabling that is specified in ANSI/ICEA S-91-661, ANSI/EIA/TIA 568, and ISO/IEC 11801. Cat 6 was developed specifically in support of 1000Base-T, also known as GbE or GigE, spreading the signals over each of four pairs. Cat 6 runs over 22-24 AWG unshielded twisted pair (UTP), shielded twisted pair (STP), and screened twisted pair (ScTP) and is rated at 250 MHz at distances up to 220 meters. Some manufacturers claim performance up to 400 MHz. In ISO/IEC 11801 terms, Cat 6 falls into Class E (≤ 250 MHz). See also 1000Base-T, AWG, ScTP, STP, and UTP. |
