Ytterby Pronounced Iterbe. The village in Sweden where the element erbium (Er) was discovered. So were the elements ytterbium, yttrium, and terbium. Also discovered in Ytterby was the element holmium, but it was named for Stockholm, which is some 10 miles distant. Further discovered in Ytterby was the element gadolinium, which was named for Johan Gadolin (1760–1852), the Finnish scientist who discovered them all in 1794. There probably have been other things discovered in Ytterby, but you’ll have to discover them in another book. Erbium, by the way is used in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), which are amplifiers used in fiber optic transmission systems (FOTS). See also EDFA, erbium, and FOTS. |
