单词 transponder (transmitter/responder)
释义

transponder (transmitter/responder)

A radio or radar transmitter-receiver. 1. In a telecommunica-

tions context, a transponder is a satellite repeater, which accepts the weak incoming signals from the Earth stations, boosts them, shifts them from the uplink to the downlink frequency, and retransmits them to the Earth stations in what is known as a bent pipe network configuration. Contemporary satellites commonly support as many as 28–46 transponders. Current generations of broadband satellites are replacing the relatively dumb bent pipe transponder approach with onboard processors capable of switching and routing traffic over intersatellite links in support of IP, Frame Relay, and ATM traffic. 2. Transponders also are used in aviation applications. Commercial and general aviation aircraft are fitted with transponders that automatically respond to queries from ground stations and military aircraft with preprogrammed IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) information, including altitude. The transponder can be tracked to determine direction, speed, rate of ascent or descent, and so on. See also bent pipe and satellite.
