Robustness Principle Also known as Postel’s Law. A principle stated by Jon Postel in RFC 793 (1981) and again in RFC 1122 (1989), Requirements for Internet Hosts – Communications Layers. The Robustness Principle states,“Be liberal in what you accept, and conservative in what you send,” which essentially advises the Internet community to design host software in such a way as to 1) be prepared for malevolent incoming packets and 2) be prepared for deficiencies on other hosts that can make it unwise to exploit legal but obscure protocol features that can cause disruption if the other host misbehaves.
