Gross, Al As a high school student in Cleveland, Ohio (United States) in 1938, Al Gross invented the walkie talkie, a portable handheld radio transmitter-receiver. Gross also is credited with inventing the pager, the citizens band (CB) radio, and the cordless telephone. Gross also lobbied the FCC to create the Personal Radio license spectrum, which later became Citizens Radio Service Frequency Band, or Citizens Band (CB) radio. Gross formed the Citizens Radio Corporation, which manufactured and sold personal two-way radios, mostly to farmers and the United States Coast Guard.
