directionality 1. The extent to which an optical beam is lined up with the core of an optical fiber. Collimated light beams are lined up in perfect parallel. Divergent light beams spread out as they exit the source. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) emit the most divergent light beams, and laser diodes emit the least divergent.
