1. (giant panda, Ailuropoda melanoleuca) A specialized bear (family Ursidae) with thick black and white fur that inhabits the bamboo forests of the Qinling Mountains, Sichuan province, China. It feeds almost exclusively on bamboo, its round face and large body size being evolutionary adaptations to conserve energy, necessitated by the low metabolic rate sustained by its nutritionally poor diet.
2. (red panda, Ailurus fulgens) A mammal (family Ailuridae) that has reddish fur and is about 60 cm long with a long, banded tail of similar length. It occurs in temperate forests in the Himalayan region, and feeds only on bamboo.
