An analytical spectroscopic technique based on the fact that certain nuclides, solidly built into a crystal lattice, and at temperatures significantly below a certain temperature, emit gamma rays. The crystal absorbs the recoil momentum, making it negligible because of the large number of atoms in the lattice, and there is virtually no loss of energy by the gamma photons.
