单词 palynology
释义
palynology

Biology
  • The study of fossil pollen and spores (pollen analysis) and various other microfossils, such as coccoliths and dinoflagellates. Palynology is used in stratigraphy, palaeoclimatology, and archaeology. Pollen and spores are very resistant to decay and therefore their fossils are found in sedimentary rocks. They may be extracted by various methods, including boiling with potassium hydroxide solution, washing with strong oxidizing mixtures, and centrifuging repeatedly. Spores and pollen are classified according to shape, form of aperture, and both internal and external details of the exine (outer coat). They indicate the nature of the dominant flora, and therefore the climate and conditions of the period in which they lived.

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • The study of living and fossil pollen grains, spores, and certain other microfossils (e.g. dinoflagellates and coccolithophorids). Palynology was developed from pollen analysis and deals principally with structure, classification, and distribution. It has many applications, e.g. in medicine, archaeology, petroleum exploration, and palaeoclimatology.

Geography
  • The study of pollen grains as an aid to the reconstruction of past plant environments. Kiage and Liu (2006) PPG 30, 5 combine evidence from palynology, lake sediments, and associated records, to provide a more accurate and complete assessment of the paleoenvironmental changes. ‘One drawback of palynological data is that lakes accumulate pollen from a large geographic area making it difficult to obtain information on a specific region from lake pollen’ (anon. (1997) LandOwner Resource Center). The other weakness is that most of the pollens found come from wind-pollinated species, and animal-dispersed pollen is under-represented.
