He is remembered in the philosophy of mathematics both for the celebrated construction of real numbers by means of the Dedekind cut, and for first providing the axiomatization of arithmetic by means of what are unfairly known as Peano’s postulates. His works are collected in Essays on the Theory of Numbers (1963).
