A class of stony-iron meteorite named after the German naturalist Peter Simon Pallas (1741–1811), who found a 680-kg specimen near Krasnojarsk, Russia, in 1772. In pallasites, cavities in the nickel–iron metal are filled with crystals of the hard, glassy silicate mineral olivine; the proportions of metal and silicate are about the same. Pallasites are divided into the main group (PMG) and the Eagle Station subgroup, named after the pallasite that was found at Eagle Station, Kentucky, in 1880. The Eagle Station subgroup contains more iron-rich olivines than the main group.
