His long reign witnessed a renewal of fighting between England and Scotland, with Edward III taking advantage of the Scottish king’s minority to introduce Edward Balliol as an English puppet in his place. After returning from exile in France (1334–41), David was defeated by the English at Neville’s Cross (1346) and spent eleven years in prison. His death without issue in 1371 left the throne to the Stuarts.
