单词 cusp
释义
cusp

Physics
  • A point at which two arcs of a curve intersect.

Mathematics
  • A singular point of a curve, which has a repeated tangent line. A classic example is as y2= x3, which has a cusp at (0,0). Approximating, up to second order terms around (0,0), gives the equation y2= 0, and so y = 0 is a repeated tangent line at the origin.

Astronomy
  • The region near the pointed ‘horns’ of the crescent Moon, Venus, or Mercury, as seen from Earth. The term may also be used of other bodies seen as a crescent from space probes.

Biology
  • 1. A sharp raised protuberance on the surface of a molar tooth. The cusps of opposing molars (i.e. on opposite jaws) are complementary to each other, which increases the efficiency of grinding food during chewing.

    2. A flap forming part of a valve.

Geography
  • A small hollow in a beach, U-shaped in plan; the arms pointing seawards. Beaches tend to have a series of cusps, formed when outgoing rip currents and incoming waves set up nearly circular water movements. They form by self-organization, wherein positive feedback between swash flow and the developing morphology initiates the development of the pattern, and negative feedback—from the circulation of flow within the beach cusps—causes pattern stabilization (Coco et al. (2003) J. Geophys. Res. 108, C3). Ciriano et al. (2005) J. Geophys. Res. Oceans 110, C02018 suggest that beach cusp evolution might control low-mode edge wave dynamics.
