Physics

A point at which two arcs of a curve intersect.

Mathematics

A singular point of a curve, which has a repeated tangent line. A classic example is as y²= x³, which has a cusp at (0,0). Approximating, up to second order terms around (0,0), gives the equation y²= 0, and so y = 0 is a repeated tangent line at the origin.

Astronomy

The region near the pointed ‘horns’ of the crescent Moon, Venus, or Mercury, as seen from Earth. The term may also be used of other bodies seen as a crescent from space probes.

1. A sharp raised protuberance on the surface of a molar tooth. The cusps of opposing molars (i.e. on opposite jaws) are complementary to each other, which increases the efficiency of grinding food during chewing.
