The condition in which an optical system forms an image not on a focal plane, but on a curved focal surface (usually a concave sphere) which intersects the optical axis and is perpendicular to it at the focal point. If an eyepiece produces a curved field, the image cannot be focused across the whole field of view. Schmidt cameras, which have a curved field, require the photographic film or plate to be curved to match the focal surface.
