A light-emitting diode that is based on a film of organic light-emitting semiconductor compounds rather than more traditional semiconductors, such as silicon or gallium arsenide. It is suitable for standard LED applications, but also can be easily used for screen technology, as it has the added advantage of being flexible. OLED technology is increasingly being used for flatscreen displays, especially in smartphones, and is also being rolled out as a low-energy technology for lightbulbs. A particularly high image quality can be obtained from active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes (AMOLEDs), in which the LEDs are individually controllable.
