An old name for Saturn’s C ring, which arose from the fact that it is partially transparent. Its inner edge lies 74 500 km from Saturn’s centre (14 200 km above the cloud tops), and it extends outwards for 17 500 km to the start of the B ring. Many finer rings are visible within the C ring along with broader, well-defined bands.
