A catalogue listing the spectral types of 225 300 stars down to 8th magnitude, published in 1918–24. It was compiled at Harvard College Observatory by A. J. Cannon, who assigned spectral types on the basis of the Harvard classification system. The Henry Draper Extension (HDE), containing 47 000 spectra of fainter stars, was published in 1925–36, and a second supplement containing another 86 000 stars in 1949. The catalogue was named in honour of H. Draper. Although the Harvard classification system has been superseded, stars in the Henry Draper Catalogue and Extension are still widely known by their HD or HDE numbers.
