Cronbach graduated from Fresno State College in 1934, gaining his MS from UCB in 1934 and his PhD in educational psychology from U Chicago in 1940. After posts at several universities, he joined the faculty at Stanford U in 1964, where he became Professor of Education. His classic book Essentials of Psychological Testing was published in 1949, with a 5th edition in 1990. He was elected to the NAS in 1974.
