One of NASA's twin Mars Exploration Rovers that continues to extend its record for the greatest distance travelled on the surface of another world—currently more than 40 kilometres. Launched on 8 July 2003, it landed on 25 January 2004 in Meridiani Planum, an area thought to have once been covered in water. Opportunity then embarked on what was to be a 90-day mission; but the six-wheeled rover has kept on rolling for more than 13 years and continues to remain active, despite problems with its robotic arm and issues with its memory whenever the rover is powered down.
