In transmitted-light microscopy, a mineral which appears black in thin section in plane-polarized light. The term is often used synonymously with ‘ore mineral’ although neither term is strictly correct; for example, pyrite is opaque but rarely an ore, and sphalerite is often an ore but rarely opaque.
