Cortés was believed by the Aztecs to be the god-king Quetzalcóatl and was able to overthrow the Aztec empire with a comparatively small army of adventurers. In 1521 he destroyed the Aztec capital Tenochtitlán completely and established Mexico City as the new capital of Mexico (then called New Spain), serving briefly as governor of the colony.
