A fluid used in a process as a heat transfer medium for extracting heat from one place and transferring it to another. Water is widely used as an effective coolant in heat exchangers due to its abundance, low cost, and high heat capacity. In a nuclear reactor, the coolant is used to remove heat from the core. High-pressure water is used in pressurized water reactors to prevent boiling. Liquid metal-cooled reactors use molten sodium. Mercury has also been used in the past. Gases have been used as coolants; for example, carbon dioxide was used in Magnox and AGR nuclear reactors.
