In medieval logic, the name for any one of a number of sets of rules for a debating game. In obligationes, the proponent is given a thesis to defend. The opponent is allowed to ask questions, to which the proponent has to answer ‘yes’, ‘no’, or ‘maybe’—depending on the particular rules of the game. The aim of the opponent is to trap the proponent into admitting something stipulated to be unacceptable while the aim of the proponent is to avoid this.
