单词 chemical weathering
释义
chemical weathering

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • The action of a set of chemical processes operating at the atomic and molecular levels to break down and re-form rocks and minerals. The results of chemical weathering are frequently new substances of reduced particle size, greater plasticity, lower density, and increased volume, compared with the original materials. Some of the important processes are solution, hydration, hydrolysis, oxidation, reduction, and carbonation.

Geography
  • The breaking down in situ of rocks by carbonation, hydrolysis, oxidation, solution, and attack by organic acids. Bouchard and Jolicoeur (2000) Geomorph. 32, 3–4 suggest that hydrology could be the main factor controlling chemical weathering. See Muhs et al. (2001) Soil Sci. Soc. Amer. J. 65 on the impact of climate and parent material on chemical weathering; S. Colman and D. Derthier (1986); and Kump et al. (2000) Ann. Rev. Earth & Planet. Scis 28 on chemical weathering and climate stability.
