Chemistry
  • The use of toxic chemical substances in warfare or military operations. A large number of chemicals have been designed or used for warfare, including pulmonary agents (chlorine, carbonyl chloride, diphosgene), blister agents, (lewisite, sulphur mustard, nitrogen mustard), and the nerve agents. Chemical warfare agents are classified as weapons of mass destruction by the United Nations. See also Chemical Weapons Convention.


Chemical Engineering
  • The use of chemicals as weapons. These include poisons, nerve gases, defoliants, and herbicides; mustard gas was used during the First World War. Their deployment was prohibited by the Geneva Convention in 1925; however, their production is not prohibited. The defoliant Agent Orange was used by the US during the Vietnam War.
