An imperfect crystal composed of a number of smaller crystals that have been grown together so that the corresponding crystal planes are nearly or exactly parallel but have discontinuities at their mutual surfaces. Such crystals are effectively single crystals for most practical purposes but the discontinuities form crystal defects that can affect their properties, for example by providing additional energy levels in semiconductors.
