A method of mapping the form of a land surface. It is based on the assumption that land surfaces can be divided into a number of components, each of which has a uniform gradient or curvature, and which are separated by abrupt or gentle changes of slope. The nature of the change of slope is shown on the map by a standard set of symbols. The angle of each component may be measured instrumentally.
Mapping landform segments and facets using breaks of slope and inflections (Savigear (1965) AAAG 55). ‘Landforms are discrete units that can readily be defined and verified at different scales by proven techniques, are therefore acceptable integrated classifiers of the landscape, and can be used to divide it into discrete segments’ (Bocco et al. (2001) Geomorph. 39, 3–4).
